August 2nd is National Coloring Book Day!

Coloring books have become a big category in the publishing industry, with adult coloring leading the trend. Even those of us who are less artistically inclined can find relaxation, creativity, and fun in the pages of a coloring book.

We print coloring books for a variety of customers. As you can see, plastic spiral binding is a popular choice because of its ability to truly lay flat. Jamie David, Hawaii-based author of the early reader novel, Johann Sebastian Humpbach, created a companion coloring book (example page on the left).

Gigi Murfitt is a writer, speaker, and mentor who has developed a series of journals to help people going through tough times. She incorporated coloring book pages into her journals and devotionals. Great idea, Gigi!

It is not uncommon for our customers to ask, “How can I sell my books online?” We now have an answer that doesn’t involve major online book retailers.

Booksite with Buy Button

Sales Tools connects you directly to online shoppers with your very own Booksite. Your Booksite is a web page hosted on gorhamprinting.com that includes an image of your book cover, a book summary, reader reviews, your author photo and bio, social media links, and the all-powerful Buy Button. All you need to do is supply those pieces and we take care of the technical work.

Quality Book Printing + Safe Storage

When you enroll in Sales Tools Booksite + Store & Ship, you tell us the number of books from your print order you’d like sent to the fulfilment warehouse owned and operated by Major Goods, right here in Centralia. Major Goods stores your books in their climate-controlled facility, waiting for orders to be placed on your Booksite by your future readers.

Order Fulfillment

When your customer clicks the Buy Button and enters credit card information, Major Goods receives a notification. They pick, pack and ship your book to the address entered. Your customer pays the shipping & handling with their order, and the rest of their payment goes directly to you via PayPal.

Sales Tools

Really?!

Really! You paid us when we printed your books, so we’re not going to charge you every time a customer wants to order your book, too. We charge you once to enroll in the program and set up your web page ($170) and again every year if you’d like to continue ($60). PayPal does have a small service fee for each purchase, but the rest of the funds go right to you. It really is that simple.

You’ve Got Options

Like so many other facets of our approach to book design and printing, we can tailor our program to meet your needs. Prefer to store your books and fill your orders from home or your local post office? For $120 we’ll set up your Booksite and you receive the notification when your customer places an order.

Already have a website? You can work directly with Major Goods to integrate their sales platform (that magical Buy Button!) into your web content, then tell us how many of the books we print you’d like to store in their warehouse.

Back to School at Gorham Printing

Leaves are changing, rain is falling, and we’re all padding our commute times to account for school bus backups on the country roads that lead to our shop. There is always plenty to do this time of year, especially because we are a popular option for educators who need textbooks.

We’ve been especially excited about a new partnership with the American College of Healthcare Sciences (ACHS) in Portland, Oregon. ACHS chose us to be their book printer not only because we are a family-owned business within 100 miles of their campus, but because we offer Rainforest Alliance Certified stocks and recycle 100% of the byproduct from both our paper processing and our printer waste. Most of their textbooks have beautiful full-color interiors that really pop on our presses. Our standard stocks and lamination are exactly what they need for durable yet affordable textbooks for their students.

Customize Your Book with Gorham Printing

Are you looking for ways to set your book apart from the rest? You may want to consider a custom extra. While you won’t find these options in our Quote Generator, we do have standard pricing for extras like printed end sheets in hardcover editions, printing on the inside of perfect bound covers, and custom dies on cloth bound hardcovers.

Printed End Sheets

Printed end sheets are a great way to bring your readers into the atmosphere of your hardcover book from the moment they open the cover. Our standard pricing includes white or off-white end sheets, selected to match your interior stock.

We’ve had some terrific projects come through the shop with printed end sheets, including a web comic anthology by Peter Donahue (right).

Pricing is based on the number of books you want to print AND the number of end sheets to be custom printed (there are two end sheets in each book, and some customers opt for one custom printed and one standard) as well as the orientation of your project (portrait or landscape). Have this information ready when you inquire.

Inside Cover Printing

Softcover books don’t have end sheets, but printing on the inside cover is possible. Pricing is based on the number of books in your order and, like the end sheets, the orientation of your book. This local history book by Anni Evans has an old map printed on the inside cover. Printed Inside Cover

Custom Dies

If you are interested in an image foil stamped on your cloth bound hardcover, or a specific font for your foil-stamped title and author name, you have the option of adding a custom die to your order. Custom dies start at $150 and increase in cost based on size and complexity. Simply submit a PDF of the true-to-size image you’d like cast as a die when you place your order and submit files.

How Do I Get Started?

If you found this blog post, chances are you have content that wants to be a book. Gorham Printing is here to help!

When you decide you’re ready to turn your content into a book, one of your first questions probably pertains to cost. Aside from the binding style you’re interested in, we need three specifications to start talking about your price per book: the trim size you’d like the book to be, the page count of your print file, including color pages, and the quantity of books you’d like us to print.

Each book project that comes through our shop must have two separate components: a cover and an interior. If you have these two components in PDF format, you are ready to start pricing your book. If you know you need a softcover book with a standard trim size (5.5 x 8.5”, 6 x 9”, or 8.5 x 11”) printed on our house stock and a gloss laminated cover, check out our Quick Price tool for one-click pricing.

If your content is not yet print-ready, you may have questions about how to make it so. We offer instructions for file prep on our Prep Your Files page. We also offer comprehensive, individualized book design services guaranteed to meet your needs.

Unlike the Quick Price tool, our one-of-a-kind Quote Generator can price your design work in addition almost our entire range of product offerings. If you are interested in pricing a hardcover book or a book with a custom trim size or upgraded paper stock, set up an account on our website and play with our Quote Generator for accurate, to-the-penny pricing for your unique project.

When you’re ready to submit your book project, your quote becomes an order with a half-down deposit. You can make this payment with a credit card right through your account. After you make your payment, you will see a confirmation page that includes a link to our secure File Upload Tool.
